FIELD HOCKEY: Christopher knocks off North Salinas

In its previous two years of varsity (plus the one at junior varsity in 2009), a short list of things that have eluded the Christopher High field hockey team has formed. On it, is a victory over defending champion North Salinas. The Cougars can cross that off their list.

Christopher High varsity water polo players Natalie Garcia and Kaitlin Ramirez quickly navigated the pool with a give and go that concluded with a Garcia goal 13 seconds into Friday’s game against Everett Alvarez.

FOOTBALL: Gilroy loses game and star running back

Leading rusher Brandon Boyd, who had moments earlier electrified the home crowd, taking a pitch from quarterback Mikey Guerrero and turned it into an 85-yard completion to wide receiver Brendan Holler for a 13-6 GHS advantage, injured his right shoulder on MVC’s ensuing set of downs making a tackle.

FOOTBALL: Pacific Grove outlasts Christopher, 41-35

Christopher High and host Pacific Grove ran rampant up and down the turf Friday night. The two teams enjoyed the barnburner so much so that neither side knew when to leave.

GOLF: GHS girls hit the course for first league match

The Gilroy High girls golf team, which features four players, began the 2012 season Thursday against Santa Catalina at Del Monte Golf Course.

FIELD HOCKEY: CHS storms past Stevenson

Everything went the way of the Christopher High varsity field hockey team Thursday afternoon against Stevenson. Even the program's first recorded goal via penalty stroke was smoothly deposited by Emma Morley.

FOOTBALL: Gilroy, Christopher both on prowl for first wins

Gilroy High running back Brandon Boyd already has 408 rushing yards. At Christopher, freshman tailback Zach Almash racked up 117 yards in his first start for the Cougars. Both quarterbacks – Mikey Guerrero (GHS) and Sterling Montgomery (CHS) – have held up under the circumstances in their first two starts of their careers.

FIELD HOCKEY: Mustangs move to 4-0

Monica Marrazzo’s four goals led the Gilroy High field hockey team to a 7-0 win over host Monta Vista on Thursday.
