WRESTLING: Baker recalls state title 25 years later

Kordell Baker never needed the pomp and circumstance he received following his state championship in 1987 - the first such title for an esteemed program rich with tradition and success. To him, wrestling was always about the work, the effort and ultimately his education. But on Wednesday night, Baker joined 37 other GHS wrestling alumni for a walk down memory lane as the group was honored in a pre-dual meet ceremony on center mat at GHS.

BASKETBALL: Cougars erupt for season high, beat Grizzlies, 86-41

The Christopher High boys basketball team had little time to dwell on a difficult one-point loss to Seaside on Tuesday, as the Cougars were back on the court Wednesday against host Pajaro Valley. After a tightly contested first quarter, CHS went on a tear, outscoring the Grizzlies 29-7 in the second quarter en route to an 86-41 victory.

After going into halftime with a slim three-point lead over Gilroy, San Benito head coach David Kaplansky knew his team needed to change their style of play.

WRESTLING: Mustangs dominate versus Balers; 38 alumni honored

Thirty-eight former Gilroy High wrestlers and coaches were honored prior to Wednesday night's Tri-County Athletic League dual meet against San Benito, and the Mustangs proceeded to treat the alumni to a glimpse of the now with a dominating 64-12 victory under the spotlight at GHS.

Taylor Slattery netted a pair of goals and three other Mustangs register one in a Gilroy High girls soccer team triumph over visiting Alisal in Tri-County Athletic League action on the pitch Wednesday night.

With five games to play in the Tri-County Athletic League regular season, the Gilroy High and San Benito girls varsity basketball teams were eyeing the postseason from different perspectives as the two took the floor against one another Tuesday.

The Christopher High boys varsity basketball team led by three at halftime, by six after three quarters and held a double-digit advantage early in the fourth against visiting Seaside on Tuesday night.

SOCCER: GHS girls fall 2-1 to Palo Alto

The Gilroy High girls varsity soccer team took the pitch Monday afternoon for a nonleague match against Palo Alto that was originally scheduled for Jan. 3. The Vikings pocketed the game-winner in the in the 77th minute to down the Mustangs, 2-1.

WRESTLING: GHS takes first at Overfelt Classic

After losing his second match of Day 1 at last weekend's Mid Cals Invitational, Gilroy High freshman 106-pounder Jesse Vasquez won eight straight encounters - the eighth gave him a third-place showing. Vasquez, currently ranked No. 3 in the Central Coast Section, according to ccsrank.com, backed up that performance, increased his unbeaten streak to 13 with a 5-0 mark and took home one of five individual titles for the Mustangs at the 48th annual Overfelt Classic on Saturday in San Jose.
