CHS girls hoops defeats North Salinas on the road
The good news first: The Christopher High girls varsity basketball team picked up a 55-50 victory over perennial section power North Salinas on the road Tuesday night. The not as good news: The Cougars led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter before being outscored 23-9 in the fourth and forced to hold on for the five-point win. Either way it's dissected, though, the Cougars weathered the storm and moved to 6-2 this season after their fourth straight triumph.

FOOTBALL: Acorns win opener, snap three-game losing skid versus Mustangs
Early in the first quarter of Friday night's season opener between Live Oak and Gilroy, Acorns quarterback Taylor Turnipseed and wide receiver Dominic Maciel had a 24-yard touchdown connection nullified by penalty. It stung. The drive stalled. Little did they know at the time that they'd have a few more flag-free opportunities. Three, to be exact.
Youth Softball: 12UB Spirit gets berth to Western Nationals
SUNNYVALE—The Spirit of Morgan Hill 12UB softball team, which includes players from Gilroy, tied for fifth place at the Nor Cal ASA Championships June 26-28. The Spirit’s fifth place finish secured their spot in the ASA Girls’ 12B Western National Tournament July 27 to Aug. 2 in Medford, Ore.
