Four first-half goals were plenty to set the No. 5 Live Oak Acorns ahead of the curve en route to a 6-0 victory over No. 12 Christopher High in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Division II girls soccer playoffs on a warmer-than-usual late-winter Wednesday in Morgan Hill.

It wasn't exactly the start that the Christopher girls tennis team was looking for. The Cougars lost six of the seven matches at Pajaro Valley Thursday. Emily Barham was the lone victor, winning in two sets 6-4, 6-4. The doubles pair of Sara Blawski and Minna Wu kept their match close, before ultimately falling in to sets 7-5, 6-4. The Cougars were playing without the services of two of their normal varsity starters, but coach Patrick McBrearty said that it was a taste of what some of his JV players could expect from the next level. "The good thing is it gave some of the other CHS players a chance to get into the competition," he said. "Hopefully we can field a full team against Gilroy." Christopher will be back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday to host Gilroy.  VOLLEYBALL Gilroy loses in three to Alvarez Gilroy dropped it's league opener 3-0 Thursday at Everette Alvarez. The Mustangs lost 19-25, 16-25, 21-25 and were led offensively by Leilani Mah.
