Dear Editor:
On Friday night, Saint Mary Catholic School in its 132nd year sent the graduating class of 8th graders onto their future. To watch these 35 young adults move onto high school was a proud moment for the faculty and staff who have worked in partnership with parents to educate these children.
This spirit of community and working together is part of the mission of St. Mary School. Built in 1871, St. Mary Parish was the center of the fledgling city of Gilroy as it grew and flourished. The tables have turned as our school looks to the local community with gratitude for the support that it lends to our students.
On behalf of the students and parents of our school, the faculty extends a heartfelt thanks to the people, businesses and organizations that have taught us, supported us and welcomed us throughout this past school year.
Members of our local community give freely of their time in classroom settings. Businesses support our major fundraisers – Spaghetti Dinners, Read-A-Thon, Arts and Craft Faire and our very successful Blue and White Auction. Many businesses donate their services for special school projects. Organizations, such as our local Fire and Police Department, Museum and Library teach the children in the classrooms and welcome us where they do business.
To list each and every one of our supporters is not possible, and we would surely forget someone! But we would truly be remiss if we did not publicly thank The Gilroy Dispatch for the exceptional coverage they have given our school events this year and in the past. Special thanks to Publisher William Barry, Executive Editor Mark Derry, City Editor Jodi Engle and Chief Photographer James Mohs for so generously following our students’ activities and sharing them with the community through their excellent stories and photos.
Thank you, Gilroy, for keeping us strong, helping us to grow and allowing us to provide a Catholic education to those who desire it.
