St. Mary School will have free performances tonight of the play “The Wizard of Wonderland.”

Two performances are open to the public at the school gym at 10:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. at 7900 Church St. in Gilroy.

The play, which eighth graders put on each year with the help of teacher Cecile Mantecon, is a comedy/adventure written by Joseph Robinette. It uses characters from L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” There is an underlying theme of peace and responsibility, where the characters work together to help a young boy. The young boy realizes that if he had been more responsible, it would have been a lot easier to help his new friends.
