MORGAN HILL – A 26-year-old alleged Norteño gang member accused of stabbing two teenagers outside a party in San Martin the evening of Dec. 29 was taken into custody this morning by Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Enrique “Chino” Macias was caught in a field near Middle Avenue in San Martin, according to Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Terrance Helm. Deputies were alerted at 8:50 a.m. by an employee of the Ultramar gas station on Monterey Road in San Martin that Macias was in the store. She told deputies she recognized him from flyers that have been distributed.

Helm said deputies approached the area quietly.

“They set up a perimeter around the store,” he said. “We had him corralled, but apparently he felt the wagons circling and became upset. He fled through the rear of the store into a field. By doing so, he ran right into the arms of our deputies.”

Macias apparently tried to hide under some bushes, Helm said, before surrendering to police. He was not armed. Deputies searched the area for items Macias may have stashed, but found nothing, Helm said.

Macias was taken into custody at 9:25 a.m. and taken to Santa Clara County jail.

The stabbing occurred in the 80 block of East San Martin Avenue when two teens and a friend were allegedly attacked by Macias when arriving at a party. Macias allegedly began stabbing one of the teens when he got out of a car and the other teen – who was the driver of the car – when he got out and tried to control Macias.

Macias then allegedly fled when a third teen emerged from the back seat of the vehicle. The teens drove themselves to the hospital. They were later released.

A motive for the attack has not been determined.
