A young man sought refuge around 7 p.m. Sunday at the busy Gilroy outlets after he was stabbed by two unknown suspects from a rival gang.

The victim, who told Gilroy police he was walking eastbound near the intersection of Murray Street and Leavesley Road, identified himself as a street gang member from a neighboring city.

According to the victim, he was confronted by rival gang members, assaulted and then fled to a retail store at the Gilroy outlets near 8300 Arroyo Circle.

A press release issued by the GPD states at 7:03 p.m., the Gilroy Police/Fire Communications center received a call from an anonymous person who initially reported the incident as a medical event, then moments later reported the occurrence as a stabbing.

The victim was treated for a non-life threatening wound at a Bay Area hospital.

GPD Sgt. Chad Gallacinao declined to release the victim’s identity, and said the suspects are still at large.

The incident is being investigated by the Anti-Crime Team, as it appears this was a direct assault carried out by rival gang members, according to the release.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Anti-Crime Team Corporal Dutton at (408) 846-0350.
