Gilroy – After the first day of the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions Monday, five of nine Gilroy wrestlers qualified for the final day of competition.
Adin Dueñas (135 pounds), Armando Gonzalez (140) and Hunter Collins (171) all advanced in the championship bracket while Martin Gonzalez (103) and Nico Naranjo (113) are still alive in the consolation bracket after losses yesterday.
Highlights from Monday included 12th-seeded Collins’ 9-5 upset of fifth-seeded Chris Platt of Eagle Point, Ore. Armando Gonzalez, who is the No. 1 seed in the 140-pound bracket, finished his day in dramatic fashion. He had a takedown with eight seconds to go against an unseeded opponent from Broken Arrow, Okla. to win 4-2. Dueñas, who is seeded sixth in 135, easily won his matches.
Gilroy assistant coach Mike Koester considered the first day a success.
“Everyone won matches,” he said.
