The CALSTAR base in Gilroy has a McDonnell Douglas 902, a $6.5 million technologically advanced helicopter that has many advantages over the former model, including a quieter motor. The new helicopter is also less maintenance intensive, burns less fuel and is safer. It uses a different aerodynamic system that eliminates the tail rotor. Because of the advantages of the newer model, several of the helicopters have been purchased for CALSTAR bases. The old helicopter is scheduled to be used at another base.
