Summer Concert Series Kicks off Saturday

Gilroy – The Summer Concert Series begins a five-week run from 5:30 to 7:30pm Saturday at Christmas Hill Park. The series kicks off with Ritmo on the Gazebo stage.

The series continues June 23 with Silver Creek on the Gazebo stage, June 30 with the Silicon Valley Houserockers in the amphitheater, July 7 with Big Rain in the amphitheater, and concludes July 14 with the South Bay Swing Band on the Gazebo stage.

New VTA Fares Approved, go into Effect in September

San Jose – New fares for Valley Transportation Authority buses were approved this week for fiscal years 2008 and 2009, to go into effect in September. The reduced fares are aimed at increasing ridership, and were recommended by a comprehensive fare study.

The fares are as follows: adult day pass – $5 (formerly $5.25), adult express day pass – $10 (formerly $10.50), youth day pass – $4 (formerly $4.50), senior/disabled day pass – $2 (formerly $2.25), youth monthly pass – $40 (formerly $49), and senior/disabled monthly pass – $20 (formerly $26).

Community Bus Service fares change July for adults – $1, express, youth ages 5 to 17 – 50 cents, youth younger than 5 – free, senior/disabled – 50 cents.

Sue’s Coffee Free Shows Continue Downtown

Gilroy – Sue’s Coffee presents several Friday night shows this summer. The are:

n Kelly McDonald, June 15. Real country music and western rock and roll. A little of Chris LeDoux, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and John Conlee with nuance, ache and spunk.

– High Voltage, June 22. With revival and some Rolling Stones mixed in, you’ll enjoy a evening of classic rock.

– Kate Pearson, June 29. On tour from Boston, this singer/songwriter sings witty lyrics, plays clever melodies and beautiful string arrangements in a folk rock/acoustic style.

SV Music Makers Begins Fourth Year

Gilroy – Now beginning a fourth year of musical celebration and friendship, South Valley Music Makers will hold its next bimonthly meeting from 1 to 4pm, Saturday, June 23, at the studios of The Music Academy, Fourth and Church streets, in downtown Gilroy. The community is heartily invited to attend, to listen and enjoy, or perhaps to bring an instrument or some music and share.

South Valley Music Makers was established by Gilroy musicians Candace Fazzio and Chris and Jack Bradshaw in order to provide a venue for those wishing to share their favorite tunes and meet others who enjoy playing and listening to music of all varieties.

Attendees share their knowledge of the music in an open, interactive setting where audience members often contribute historical information, too. Both experienced and novice players share their repertoire in a nurturing environment. New “members” are always welcomed with a warm and accepting attitude.

Go Fly a Kite at Pacheco State Park’s Sixth Kite Day

Gilroy – Experience the color and excitement of Kite Flying Saturday, June 16, and let’s see how many kites we can fly up at Pacheco Pass. The Sixth Annual Family Kite Day will be held at Pacheco State Park, in a big windy field. The kites fly from 1 to 5pm.

Everyone who flies a kite will receive a souvenir Kite Day button. There will be other fun activities including a ‘Make Your Own Kite Free’ table and free face painting, as well as pie eating contests, bubble gum blowing contests, and a ‘candy-drop’ kite. Families are encouraged to bring a kite, hats and/or sunscreen, drinking water, lawn chairs and a picnic lunch. Drop by anytime and join the fun. The only fee is the $5 state park day use fee per vehicle.

To reach Pacheco State Park, take Highway 152. The park is located 25 miles east of Gilroy and 22 miles west of Los Banos, at the top of historic Pacheco Pass. Turn south off of Highway 152 at the Dinosaur Point exit, and then turn right, going through the park gate, following the kites down the dirt road into Pacheco State Park.

Classic Cars on Display at Elks Lodge Car Show

Gilroy – The Elks Lodge presents its 4th Annual Classic Car and Truck Show from 11am to 3:15pm, Saturday at 2765 Hecker Pass Highway.

A special invitation is extended to all autos and trucks built prior to 1977. Entrance fee is $35 which includes one lunch ticket and one T-shirt.

Enjoy food, music by JJ Hawg and family fun, including raffles and prizes.

Enjoy a Bird Walk Along Serene Coyote Creek

Morgan Hill – A series of bird walks led by Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent for 20 years and Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center volunteer, continues from 9 to 11am Saturday along Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill. Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance.

Due to the terrain, these walks are not recommended for young children. The programs are free, space is limited and reservations are required.

History Comes Alive in San Juan Bautista

San Juan Bautista – Who says history is only learned from books? Visit Early Days at San Juan Bautista State Historic Park from 11am to 4pm on June 16, pm, where history comes alive with period costumes and demonstrations. Experience a Civil War Battle at Casa de Fruta

Hollister – The public is invited to meet the soldiers in the field and experience camp life first hand. Ongoing living history demonstrations depicting the daily life of the soldiers, women and children of the American Civil War and Victorian Era, located at 10021 Pacheco Pass Highway. The fun takes place from 1 to 4pm Saturday, June 23 and from 11am to 2pm Sunday, June 23.
