Short-handed Mustang tennis falls to Haybalers for first time in
4-3 loss
HOLLISTER – One shift in the line-up caused the Gilroy High boys tennis team to forfeit one of seven matches, which ended up being the determining factor in Tuesday’s slim 4-3 road loss to San Benito.
“I moved everybody up,” said head coach Chris Wolowier, whose squad dropped to 4-7 on the season.
With junior Peter Adams out of the singles line-up due to illness, the Mustangs fell to the Haybalers for the first time in three meetings. Gilroy won the previous two by scores of 6-1 and 4-3.
Senior Christian Rivera, in the No. 1 singles spot, and junior Ryan McBrearty – Adams’ replacement in the No. 2 position – both lost in straight sets. Senior Andres Sandoval slip up to the No. 3 slot and also faltered in two sets, while freshman Ben Wilson picked up the only singles win in the No. 4 position with a 6-4, 6-1 nod.
“He played really well today,” said Wolowier of Wilson, who moved back to singles after playing doubles in recent matches.
Despite forfeiting the No. 3 doubles bout, Gilroy won its top two doubles matches. The top tandem of Anthony Christian and Chris Adams, as well as the second unit of Alex Santa Maria and Anthony Dragotto, cruised to straight-set victories.
“Our doubles are stepping up. They came through,” Wolowier said. “Our other guys could have won. They beat these guys before, but it happens. We just want to finish the season strong.”
The Mustangs will host North Salinas on Thursday.
