Over the next few weeks I will be talking about “swing myths”. You know what I’m talking about. It’s those tips that your playing partners always give you when in fact they really don’t know what they’re talking about.
Today we will talk about myth number one myth – keeping your head down. Most people assume that keeping your head down means to bury your chin into your breastbone. When that happens, it makes it impossible to turn your left shoulder under your chin on the backswing. The shoulder turn is thus restricted, costing you power and accuracy. Most of the time you immediately blame a topped shot on raising your head. It is very rare to acturally raise your head but more likely that you straightened your spine during the downswing. Realisticly, If your head stays down to long on the follow through it prevents the body from moving into a full free finish.
The answer to all these problems is making sure your posture is correct at your set up. Set up by bending at the hips with your knees slightly flexed. Your spine can then act as an axis around which your shoulders turn and your arms swing. Therefore there is no need to dip or rise suddenly to hit the ball.
Remember, when all else fails, take a lesson, you’ll be surprised how much we can help.
