Gilroy – No golfer nailed the $1 million money shot at Saturday’s Gavilan Rams Hole-in-One Shootout, but the event at Eagle Ridge raised $5,000 for Gavilan College athletics, according to athletic director Ron Hannon.

Fifteen participants from all over the Bay Area took a crack at winning the $1 million grand prize, taking aim at the flag on the second green at Eagle Ridge. Teresa Santos of Gilroy, the tournament’s lone female finalist, got the closest to a million-dollar hole-in-one with a beautiful shot that almost hit the flag pole on No. 2. Playing at a distance of 150 yards from the cup, Santos landed her drive near the cup, then watched it roll to a stop about 37 feet, 8 inches away from the hole.

Joe Love of Hollister couldn’t top Santos’ winning distance, but his shot to 82 feet, 4 inches from the cup was good for second place. Chang So of Hollister was a third with a shot to within 91 feet, 6 inches.

Hannon was appreciative of the participants who came out to support Gavilan athletics and try their luck.

“This year we had over 600 people participate,” he said. “It’s been an event that brings a lot of excitement and ‘what if’s.’

“We appreciate everyone’s support. The community recognizes this as a great event that benefits a worthy cause. We expect the total for this event to be at least $5,000. The funds raised will help with improvements to the athletics department.”

Hannon added that pledged funds were still being collected from event sponsors.
