The junior has sights set on state bid next season
Marty Ettema took home two souvenirs from his first Central Coast Section Track and Field Championship meet – one he can wear around his neck and the other a cut on his right knee, courtesy of a pesky hurdle sent encroaching into his lane at the conclusion of the boys 110-meter hurdles final on Friday.
“I did not like that hurdle in my lane like that,” Ettema said as he showed off the bright-red race wound to CHS head coach Jeff Myers as the two dissected the proceedings,
Despite the inadvertent interference, the Christopher High junior shaved a bit of time off of his qualifying mark to place fifth with a personal-best 15.28, to stake a claim on the podium.
“It goes by really quick,” Ettema said of the frantic hurdles race. “Your just trying to keep your form.”
Ettema entered the meet with the fifth-fastest qualifying time, or the quickest of the non-heat winners out of the CCS semifinals on May 20.
“I feel good with where I placed this year. I definitely see it as a stepping stone for next year, because I’m aiming for state. Right now I need to work on getting my leg down faster and building more muscle. I have one more year so I have to start training harder.”
