HOLLISTER — The visiting Gilroy High track and field team was unable to escape Hollister with a victory Thursday as the Mustangs dropped a Tri-County Athletic League dual meet to their rivals in San Benito.
The Balers earned a 100-36 win at the varsity boys level, and a 95-36 win at the varsity girls level.
Nevertheless, the Mustangs still shined in certain areas of the meet, like in the throwing events on the boys side.
Chima Ikeme took first in the discus event when he recorded a 137-04, which was roughly six feet short of his personal best for this season — a 143-01 set at the K-Bell Invitational last weekend — but still good enough to pick a first-place finish on Thursday.
In the shot put, meanwhile, Gilroy’s Cordero Gonzalez also took first place with a 45-11 1/2.
On the track, Jordan Soares took first in the 100 meters with an approximate hand-time of 11.1 seconds.
Over on the girls side, Chelsey Kalata was a two-time first-place finisher. She recorded a 12.82 in the 100 to earn the top spot, and clocked a 28.69 in the 200 to earn first place in that event as well.
In the throws, Gilroy was led by Sarina Sandoval and Angeline Kimbo. The two went 1-2 in the shot put event, with Sandoval recording a throw of 34-09 1/2 and Kimbo trailing with a 34-09.
Up next for the Mustangs will be Saturday’s Christopher “Garlic Classic” Track Invitational, while will be held at the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
Field events are expected to get under way at 8:30 a.m., with track events to follow at 9 a.m.
