Police arrested a parolee who was allegedly carrying drugs when he tried to run from a vehicle during a traffic stop.

Morgan Hill officers attempted to stop a gold 2001 Nissan for expired registration tags at about 10:45 p.m. Aug. 27, according to Sgt. Jerry Neumayer. When the car came to a stop near the intersection of Peak Avenue and Farallon Drive, the front passenger exited and ran north toward Alkire Avenue.

One of the officers was able to catch the suspect, later identified as Robert Carrillo, and tackled him, Neumayer said. Lying face down on the ground, Carrillo, 23 of Gilroy, kept his arms underneath his body.

After police were able to wrestle his arms into view, they found he was carrying a small plastic bag containing a white powdered substance that officers believed to be cocaine, Neumayer said.

Carrillo was handcuffed, and upon searching the vehicle police found more white powder scattered around the front inside passenger’s area, police said.

Carrillo was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, violation of parole and resisting arrest. He was booked into Santa Clara County Jail, Neumayer said.
