On the last day that he can qualify as a candidate, Councilman Peter Arellano is scheduled to meet with City Clerk Shawna Freels today to talk about making another run.
Freels said she also is scheduled to meet this afternoon with Peter Leroe-Munoz, a prospective candidate and deputy district attorney for San Benito County.
Leroe-Munoz said that he had been away from town with family last week, causing a delay in getting his paperwork completed, but he planned to turn in the required signatures today needed to run and looked forward to the upcoming campaign.
While Friday was the last day for incumbents such as Arellano to qualify, the nomination period for all nonincumbents runs through Wednesday, Freels said.
While Leroe-Munoz had made his intentions known about running for the council, Arellano, a local physician, had previously said he was undecided. Arellano, who could not be reached for comment Friday morning, previously had said he had been recovering from a failed bid for supervisor that he described as spiritually, emotionally and financially draining. He has served on the council from 1999 to 2003 and from 2005 to present.
Representatives from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office will review paperwork over the weekend, she said. In addition to completing proper paperwork, prospective candidates must gather at least 20 valid signatures to be placed on the ballot.
Other candidates who already have met criteria for the upcoming race are: Councilman Dion Bracco, former city council members Paul Kloecker and Russ Valiquette, former planning commissioner Art Barron and former City of Santa Clara employee Pasquale Greco. Councilman Craig Gartman will not be seeeking another term.
