Why 2014 may be a very good year

Will the economy and the bull market make further strides next year? On Wall Street and Main Street, 2013 turned out better than many analysts expected. Will the recovery gain additional momentum in 2014, and will stocks climb even higher?

Buddy the Lonesome Boy says: Be My Valentine!

Buddy says: I found my foster mom when I was a small kitten wandering the streets in Gilroy. I was very thin, dirty, and very, very hungry. She thought I had more gray patches than I really did, because I had a lot of oil and grease smears on my white fur. When she took me to the vet for something called “neutering” the vet cleaned me up while I was sleeping and I woke up with a lot more white on me. (I still don’t know exactly what they did to me that day, but it sure seems to me like I’m missing something; I haven’t figured out what yet, so I guess it’s o.k.)

Sunlit Oaks: Area’s newest winery creates a buzz

Here in Silicon Valley, we know it's possible to change the world by starting a business in your garage. Companies like Apple, Google and Hewlett-Packard all famously started in theirs. And now, these companies - and many others like them - are leaders in the charge for the Internet of Things - where the most mundane things will be embedded with sensors and monitored by the Internet. The Internet of Things, under way for years, is quickly becoming a reality and is predicted to have the most profound effect on our world since the Industrial Revolution. Even our grapevines will be micro-chipped to determine perfect sugar content.

Seeing Red: Shark infested waters

SAN JOSE — As soon as the 2013-2014 San Jose Sharks schedule was released, I quickly skimmed it looking for the day the Chicago Blackhawks would be in town.

Drop Gilroy’s high school student community service requirement

I read the headline in the Gilroy Dispatch, “No high school diploma for hundreds?” and thought what could this possibly be that could affect so many local students. My curiosity had me read more and my concern turned into frustration and many questions.

Awards for our brightest stars and hopefully plenty of raindrops coming

It’s a bang-up hit parade for the annual Spice of Life Chamber awards Saturday night with a glittering tribute on our front page to the winners. One of my favorite quotes comes from Lisa Cassara-Faria who, when asked what she loved about Gilroy said, “The people are the bomb.” So true, it’s all about the people, and it’s people like Lisa, and Don DeLorenzo, and Kai Lai, and .... who make Gilroy great. Hopefully that star-studded gala event can make a re-appearance in our sparkling town next year. Nothing against San Juan Oaks, but the city’s brightest awards ceremony ought to be shining right here in our town.
