Seeing Red: Shark infested waters
SAN JOSE — As soon as the 2013-2014 San Jose Sharks schedule was released, I quickly skimmed it looking for the day the Chicago Blackhawks would be in town.
Drop Gilroy’s high school student community service requirement
I read the headline in the Gilroy Dispatch, “No high school diploma for hundreds?” and thought what could this possibly be that could affect so many local students. My curiosity had me read more and my concern turned into frustration and many questions.
Awards for our brightest stars and hopefully plenty of raindrops coming
It’s a bang-up hit parade for the annual Spice of Life Chamber awards Saturday night with a glittering tribute on our front page to the winners. One of my favorite quotes comes from Lisa Cassara-Faria who, when asked what she loved about Gilroy said, “The people are the bomb.” So true, it’s all about the people, and it’s people like Lisa, and Don DeLorenzo, and Kai Lai, and .... who make Gilroy great. Hopefully that star-studded gala event can make a re-appearance in our sparkling town next year. Nothing against San Juan Oaks, but the city’s brightest awards ceremony ought to be shining right here in our town.
SMS Fourth Grader wins grand prize in city’s poster contest
GILROY - St. Mary School Fourth Grader Alexis Kong was a grand prize winner in the city of Gilroy's Young Artists Poster Contest. Alexis' poster was one of 5 that judges selected to be professionally printed and distributed at local schools and city facilities. The theme of this year's contest is character counts, show respect to others.
A perfect Valentine’s treat: Homemade truffles
For many, Valentine's Day means purchasing candy for your loved ones. Many years ago, candy was made in the home. I have an appreciation for this largely lost home art, which I hope this week can have a resurrection with recipes for chocolate truffles.
NHL: Wingels scores in OT to give Sharks 2-1 nod over Dallas

When Harry met Laurie (the Catholic burglar)
I met my husband when I was burglarizing his house. Or maybe I was robbing it. Is there a difference? I mean, in “Law & Order” - which I watch all the time because I am slowly morphing into my 92-year-old grandmother; another column entirely - um, in “Law & Order” they say burglary. But then I've heard some say robbery. Also? Homicide - but I'm very, very certain that did not come into play the night I met Harry.

Valentine’s Day combines pagan and Christian elements
Well, it could be merely a coincidence, but the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Jose has chosen Feb. 15 for its annual Wedding Anniversary Celebration. San Jose's St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica (880 S. Market St.) will host a special Mass for all couples observing their fifth (or less), 25th, 40th and 50th (or more) years of marriage. Couples will renew wedding vows, receive a blessing from Bishop Patrick McGrath, get a certificate marking the occasion and enjoy a reception afterward. All of this occurs on the day after Valentine's Day.
