Feral cats are killing our native birds

Full disclosure: I love cats. My family had pet cats for much of my childhood. However, there are far too many feral cats - cats that were once domesticated but have returned to the wild, or ones born in the wild - out there.

Painful year brings forth new sense of self

With just days left in 2013, I’ve been ruminating on the past year and wondering what the future may hold. Personally, it’s been a tumultuous year and a half and I’m hopeful the winds will begin to shift come 2014.

Scrapbook Dec. 22-28, 2013

HONORS: Nicolette Sheridan

You finished your Big Race. Now what?

You decide to take up running. And it’s hard, but you have made a commitment, so you keep running because you are determined to become active and make a change in your life. And after a few days, weeks, two, three months, it gets a little easier, so you keep running. And, eventually, it becomes a habit, and most of the time, at least, you look forward to going out on your run. And now you are faster and you can run farther than you did when you started, and you’re feeling pretty good about yourself. So you think about taking up a challenge: a 5K or 10K race; a half marathon, marathon, trail race, ultramarathon; whatever.

Ring in New Year with delicious drinks

Challenge for the New Year

Why does life throw challenges and crisis at us? Because that is the only way we will change. It is the only way we will rid ourselves of evil, bad habits, greed, ego and the wrong priorities. It’s human nature wanting to stay the course, not to rock the boat, and usually the only way we will change is if we are forced into it by some outside influence, i.e. financial crisis, death, illness, catastrophe. We have to look at the challenges as an opportunity and as a way to re-prioritize what is important.

2013 Year in Review

It's hard to believe another year has come and gone. Looking back, 2013 indeed was a pivotal year for housing markets nationwide. Many markets saw an incredible bounce back, homeowners regained equity and mortgage rates for the most part remained incredibly low.

New Year’s resolutions for No-no Lulu – from doggy sister

Hello, it's me, Kirby the dog. Every year the human female allows me to write her holiday column. Well, I'm telling you, I'm fed up with this. I mean, I sit and type - without opposable thumbs, mind you - and all I get is a piece of dried-out sweet potato for my effort.
