What Do You Think about When Running?

Recently, I started reading What I Talk about When I Talk about Running by Haruki Murakami, the Japanese novelist. The book is about how running informs Murakami's writing and how writing informs his running. If you are a runner or a writer, or both, you will enjoy the insights that he provides, which are part running thoughts, part writing thoughts, and part philosophical musings on both. But at one point near the beginning of the book, he mentions that people often ask him what he thinks about as he runs. He says, "I don't have a clue." Of course, he says, if it's cold outside, he is thinking about that, or if he's sad, he might think about sadness, or if he's happy, he might think about happiness. But, overall, he says, "I don't think much of anything worth mentioning."He just runs in a void; more precisely, he runs "to acquire a void." This sounds to me as if he uses running as a form of meditation, a moving meditation where he tries to stay in the moment and not really think at all.

Cirque Du Soleil’s ‘Amaluna’: A masterpiece to be experienced

“Amaluna” moves our planet to another universe and scans the surface of William Shakespeare's “The Tempest.” It moves its artists on a fanciful, unforgettable journey that - at times - takes the breath away. Esteemed award-winning Broadway director Diane Paulus has been given the reins to create this glorious work of art. (Paulus also directed the brilliant “Porgy and Bess” production now playing in San Francisco and the Tony winning revival of “Pippin”.)

Local Author Writes Supernaturally

Leta Rae Pereira is a local author residing in Hollister. She and her husband Joe re-located to this area in 2005. She is the mother of a daughter and son, and the grandmother of three grandsons and two granddaughters. She has served as a peer counselor at Hollister Pregnancy Center since 2008, and is involved in the activities of her church home, Hollister Christian Fellowship. These are all rolls she has cherished. Yet, there is one other she never anticipated. She had never imagined that writing poetry was going to become a part of her life's story. Even so, it happened...suddenly!

St. Mary School delivers food to St. Joseph’s Family Center

Following more than a decade long tradition, students at St. Mary School in Gilroy collected canned food items and donations this month for St. Joseph’s Family Center’s Holiday Collection.

From snowy days to a latte among leaves

People say their favorite holiday is Thanksgiving: no rushing around (except to get that turkey on the table), no gifts to wrap, no crush of holiday shopping. Just the natural warmth overflowing from a holiday filled with food, friends and family getting together to share and give thanks.

Enjoy the holiday with improved green bean casserole

Many of us will have a green bean casserole on our Thanksgiving table, regardless if we like it or not. I was never a fan because it always seemed too “heavy” and lacked good flavor. I have had a change of heart over the last year and began to enjoy green bean casserole. My taste had not changed, but the recipe had. This week, I share my recipe for an “improved” Homemade Green Bean Casserole.

The ever shifting market

Wow, what a difference a few months makes. Starting in early 2012 and thorough summer of this year, houses were selling as fast as they came on the market. Most homes were getting multiple offers, and nice homes were getting 10-20 offers. Selling prices were driven up well beyond what most of us expected. Buyers were waving inspections, appraisal and loan contingencies and still getting outbid. Many unsuccessful buyers got frustrated and threw in the towel.

Playoff time!
