A melodious evening at the Milias
The Milias Restaurant was the place to be last Friday night in Gilroy. Talented vocalist Sandra Marlowe was a draw for many to come out for an evening of good food and even better music. For the past year, Marlowe has been promoting and performing songs from her new CD, “True Blue,” which includes tracks such as “Honeysuckle Rose” and “Black Coffee.” She has been singing at venues from Berkeley to Santa Cruz and was a featured artist in the San Jose Jazz Festival at the Fairmont Hotel.
Garlic Festival Pitmasters start your fires, and let’s get the party started
Hey, so I really, really like John Melone’s idea of a BBQ competition at the Garlic Festival. It’s a slam dunk match. The son of the late Rudy Melone, co-founder of the festival, could be on to the next big food event at our fest, one that could attract another wave of media attention and add even more zest to the crowd appeal. I watch BBQ Pitmasters on TV. It’s a reality television series which pits three cooks against one another in a timed competition with cash and prizes on the line, including a shot at $50,000 for winning the whole shebang as the Kingsford BBQ Champion. Myron Mixon, the winningest man in BBQ, and BBQ Masters Tuffy Stone and Aaron Franklin are the usual judges. If you like to BBQ or enjoy cooking, it’s a fascinating show filled with a dizzying array of different cookers and methods. Most competitions are held at festivals in the south at places like the Barnesville BBQ and Blues Festival in Georgia, so I’d bet burnt ends from the beef brisket that Myron and company would love to make a beeline for California and the Garlic Festival. The “Pigs in the Park with Garlic” BBQ competition (which I’m sure will have a new name next year) begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday to the right of the Cook-off Stage with the judging at 4:45 p.m. Wander by – maybe they’ll even put out a suggestion box for a new name … Q’d up at the Garlic Fest, Grilling Garlic Gurus, Up in Garlic Smoke ... c’mon, ya’ll got one …
Perfect salad for summer – and the Garlic Fest
This is truly a wonderful and historic day for the South Valley! Right in our own backyard, we celebrate 35 years of one of the premiere food festivals in the entire world: The Gilroy Garlic Festival. The festival is the inspiration this week for a classic West Coast salad, which features beautiful grilled garlic shrimp.

To the casual observer, South Valley seems to be a prosperous area. There are lavish homes, well-kept landscaping, expensive cars and other signs of wealth. But beneath this glitzy surface there is a good deal of poverty and despair.

This time, we will talk about one of the most exciting auctions in bridge: bidding for slam. It’s not always the most comfortable process, but it’s definitely more exciting because the stakes are very high.

We've been working on an interesting file the last few weeks that involved a buyer, our seller, three past beneficiaries, the title company, their legal department, the seller’s lawyer, two brokers, many support people and a few couriers. As you might imagine, with that many people involved, things haven't been very smooth.
‘Love, Loss and What I Wore’
Nora and Delia Ephron (sisters) took the book “Love, Loss and What I Wore” by Ilene Bacmerman, added stories of some of their friends and their own experiences, and came up with a delightful production that hits home with most women and can tickle the funny bone of the guys in the audience. Sadly Nora Ephron died this past summer and left an enormous library of plays and books. Best known are “When Harry Met Sally,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and this play.
