Stand up for freedom (from pain)
Finding ways to stand up during your day can promote your health and comfort.
Could the bulls still run without the Fed?
Could this bull market last with less help from the Federal Reserve? Is it propped up by the Fed's stimulus, or strong enough to sustain itself if the central bank reduces its efforts? Some factors hint that the economy and the market may have a bit more strength than assumed, even with Q2 GDP projections being tempered.
Getting out: Clouds Rest Challenge is coming
Last December in this column, I laid down the Clouds Rest Challenge. I invited readers to join me on a tough 13.2-mile hike from Tenaya Lake (8,150 feet) to the top of Clouds Rest (9,926 feet), an iconic Yosemite peak. Back then, the July 13, 2013 date of the Challenge was a long way off. Not anymore.
Pet therapy in nursing homes
When the time comes for a family member to move into a nursing home or retirement community many worry that their loved ones will begin to feel lonely and unneeded as time goes by. Fortunately, thanks to people such as Kit Darling and Dr. Karen Snowden and their work with organizations like Aggieland Pets With A Purpose, many elderly residents are getting the chance to experience the unconditional love of a pet.
Morgan Hill Freedom 5K Run/Walk
The Morgan Hill Freedom 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Kid's Run is coming up on Thursday the Fourth of July. At 3.1 miles, the 5K, can be a challenging distance for many people, but veteran long-distance runners sometimes dismiss the 5K--it's even shorter than their normal warm-up. But the 5K is a challenging distance in its own right. It requires that the runner push him or herself faster than any other long distance race, yet it's very easy to over commit in that first mile to a mile and a half and have little or nothing left at the end of the race.
Wrestling with the good, the bad and the silly street tree ‘crisis’
Gladdens my heart to read Sports Editor Erin Redmond’s story about the new wrestling room under construction at Gilroy High. The storied Mustang program is steeped in life lessons. The wrestlers learn about discipline, respect, commitment, competition, camaraderie and the resilient human spirit. The cache may not be the same as football, basketball or baseball, but it deserves full respect from school trustees and community, much like the GHS field hockey program. Those two programs change young lives forever for the better and are in the same category as Phil Robb’s (now retired) glorious music program.
Catholic ministry reaches out to young adults
It is pretty much agreed that young adults tend to stop practicing the faith they were brought up in. Graduating from high school can seem like a graduation from religion; and attendance at church, temple or mosque soon drops off.
What I love and hate about the real estate business
As I sit here on the lanai, warm ocean breeze blowing in and palm trees swaying in the wind, I've just poured myself a glass of Merlot. My wife and I are celebrating our anniversary and I can't imagine a better place to be than the west side of Maui.
Blockbuster shows in SF
The season starts with the pre-Broadway premiere of the new Carole King musical, “Beautiful,” which opens Sept. 24 at the Curran Theatre. This is a new and inspiring stage biography of one of America's most enduring music icons and runs through Oct. 20.
