Your financial life: Getting started

A few months ago I wrote an article on preparing for a time of loss and the importance of having your affairs in order. Since then, in talking with readers and clients, many have expressed that they simply don't know how to get started and/or don't have a clear idea of what the end result should look like. Today I'd like to address these questions.

‘Wild With Happy’: Doing the right thing

Colman Domingo's Gil – his hero in “Wild with Happy” (a play he wrote and stars in) – wants to do the right thing. His dynamic mom dies and he has to tie up the loose ends on limited funds and a heavy, guilty heart.

100-year-old winery continues with 3rd owner

Morgan Hill Cellars is the oldest winery in our region and celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The winery was founded in 1913 by an Italian immigrant named Camillo Colombano who planted Barbera root stock brought over from Italy. From 1945 to 2006, the Pedrizzetti family owned and operated the winery. Changing hands for the third time in 2006, it is now owned by Mike and Maryclaire Sampognaro.

Measure P bond dollars are not for operational expenses

Dear Red Phone, “I'm reading the Dispatch and see there's going to be district budget cuts. What were the taxes raised for? Our taxes have gotten raised three times in the last year so this wouldn't happen. So why is this still happening? Where are our tax dollars going?”

Pastor’s humble approach, calm presence will be missed

The Gilroy United Methodist Church (GUMC) was the first church formed in 1853 in the area known as “Pleasant Valley,” 17 years before the town of  Gilroy came into existence. In 2001, GUMC became the first mainline church in Gilroy to have a woman senior pastor at the helm when Rev. Alison Berry broke the stained glass ceiling. In 2009, GUMC welcomed its first African-American senior pastor, and in 2010, their first Korean-American senior pastor, Rev. Eric C. Cho, came to serve in Gilroy.

Tough to get an ‘instant read’ on the sweeping city bond idea

Barbecuing a beef brisket – wonderful cuts available by the way at Rocca’s Market in San Martin – takes about 10-12 hours to do it right, so you’ve really got a lot invested in time and technique. That’s why I appreciated this line so much after smoking a brisket last weekend and then continuing to make what’s known as “burnt ends” – tasty chunks of beef bursting with flavor. Alton Brown, Food Network Star and author of multiple cookbooks, nailed it: “Bimetal coil thermometers are about as accurate as a sniper scope on a nerf gun.” So, if Dad likes to BBQ, a good instant read thermometer would be a great gift …

Five words essential to understanding teens

I am always in awe of people who speak more than one language. Frankly, mastering English was a bit of a stretch for me (and yes, using the word “master” to describe my language skills is also a bit of a stretch). In high school, I spent three years in Spanish class. Three. Miserable. Years. That is time I can never, ever get back. And yet, after all that torture, the spanglish menu at Taco Bell can still be bewildering.

Be aware of the risks of not investing

You’ve no doubt heard about the risks associated with investing. This investment carries this type of risk, while that investment carries another one. And it is certainly true that all investments do involve some form of risk. But what about not investing? Isn’t there some risk associated with that, too?
