Sharks back in series after 2-1 OT victory over Kings

SAN JOSE – Logan Couture spent much of the second period out of action because of an injury as the San Jose Sharks took on the Los Angeles Kings in the third game of the Western Conference Semifinals at HP Pavilion.

Fishing for a hometown hero, and choo-choo the Garlic Fest train is back

Played a round of golf at Eagle Ridge recently with an out-of-town fellow in a funny hat, a real talker as it turns out. We shook hands, introduced ourselves and he said, “Do you fish?” Then I noticed the fisherman-style boots and pegged the hat. I have fished, mostly with a fly-fishing guide, but I’m not a fisherman. Never played golf with someone who yakked about fishing so much that I thought he was going to pull out a pole when we were teeing off on No. 12, the hole that runs around Santa Teresa Boulevard. Indeed, he went over, gazed across the pond and looked deeply into the water before proclaiming, “Yep, there’s bass in there, I’m sure of it, big bass, too.” In case you’re wondering, yep, he smacked a low liner right into the water – bait for the lurking bass. Saturday morning, you can do better. There’s the Third Annual Jeramy Ailes Fishing Derby to honor our own hero, Corporal Ailes, who was killed in Iraq. It’s at McAlpine Lake in San Juan Bautista. Registration begins at 6 a.m. with the derby from 7 to 11 a.m.  followed by a BBQ and prizes. Cost is 13 and up $35, 12 and under $25, day pass with no fishing $17, 2 and under free. Funds go to the Jeramy Ailes Memorial Scholarship. All the fishy details are available at: mcalpinelake.com/jeramyailesmemorialderby.html. Get up early, bring the kids and honor Jeramy’s sacrifice.

A checklist for newlyweds

So you're getting married, congratulations! Whether you are young and marrying for the first time or a bit older and tying the knot again, this column can help you build a good foundation as you begin your new life together.

Make sure you have a PLAN

How many times have you completed play, only to realize that, if only you had played just a little bit differently, you might have taken an extra trick or two? I know I have. Over the years, the bridge gurus have developed a number of concepts and proven techniques that maximize your total trick count. The first concept, and to me, the most important, is the PLAN where each letter of the word PLAN has a specific meaning.

It’s Christmas in May – at least in my head it is

Last week, something awful happened. I got a song stuck in my head and I couldn't get it out. And this was not just any song. This was a super-annoying song. A song that nobody in their right mind would want rattling around their brain. Yes, it was the song from hell.

Pastor dispels fear of Islam

There is no doubt the terrorist attacks of 9/11 spread fear among the U.S. public, and the recent Boston Marathon bombing has raised the anxiety level once again. No doubt, some of the ongoing controversy concerning the proposed mosque in San Martin can be attributed to this phenomenon, but perhaps a new book can help alleviate this problem.

Gun charges dropped as boxer pleads guilty to disorderly conduct

Gilroy boxer Robert Guerrero had gun charges dropped against him in New York and instead accepted a plea deal on a lesser charge in connection with his arrest in late March for bringing a firearm into an airport.

Getting Out: New Idria is full of lore

Many of my favorite adventures began on the sofa with a map. I see a vast blank region crossed by a single lonely road and wonder: “What the heck is out there?” One day, the lure is too great to resist and I go. The experience is always so much more than just another Sunday drive.

Fortino Winery: Fine wine and good times

Voted best winery in Gilroy for three consecutive years, Fortino Winery is one of the most beloved wineries in Santa Clara Valley. Fortino Winery has been in business since 1970 when Ernest and Marie Fortino bought an existing vineyard on Hecker Pass in Gilroy. Bringing winemaking traditions from their hometown of Calabria, Italy, Ernest and Marie built a reputation for quality wines and, in 1978, established one of the very first wine clubs in California.

Mrs. Clutterby needs a vacation

Some months ago I read an article about Ted Bundy, the serial killer convicted of murdering numerous women back in the 1970s and early 1980s. Bundy was a depraved individual, but he kept a very tidy and organized desk.
