Awards for our brightest stars and hopefully plenty of raindrops coming

It’s a bang-up hit parade for the annual Spice of Life Chamber awards Saturday night with a glittering tribute on our front page to the winners. One of my favorite quotes comes from Lisa Cassara-Faria who, when asked what she loved about Gilroy said, “The people are the bomb.” So true, it’s all about the people, and it’s people like Lisa, and Don DeLorenzo, and Kai Lai, and .... who make Gilroy great. Hopefully that star-studded gala event can make a re-appearance in our sparkling town next year. Nothing against San Juan Oaks, but the city’s brightest awards ceremony ought to be shining right here in our town.

New mobile app alerts local CPR-trained bystanders of nearby cardiac emergencies

According to the American Heart Association, every day nearly 1,000 Americans are killed by sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Once SCA strikes, time is critical.  For every minute that passes without a patient receiving resuscitation, the chances of that person surviving decreases by 10 percent. Unfortunately, 60 percent of SCA victims don't get CPR until professional help arrives and often, it's too late. That is why the City of Morgan Hill has teamed up with Fire Departments within Santa Clara County and El Camino Hospital to launch the PulsePoint mobile app to all of Santa Clara County, according to a press release from the City of Morgan Hill.  PulsePoint is a location-based app that alerts CPR-trained citizen bystanders that a person nearby requires help, allowing them to start CPR before the ambulance arrives, and save valuable time. When 911 is called to report a SCA, the 911 operator sends a PulsePoint alert, which is received by nearby app users who are provided the location of the SCA emergency. The app can also help locate the nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to use in resuscitation efforts. PulsePoint, when combined with CPR and AED training, is a powerful combination to potentially saving a life, according to the press release. Today's Good Samaritan laws are designed to protect those who decide to come to the aid of someone in need. If you live in Morgan Hill and have an Apple or Android smartphone, visit the Apple App Store or Android Apps on Google Play to download the PulsePoint app.  If you aren't CPR trained, sign up for training today by visiting the American Heart Association website at www.heart.org or the American Red Cross website at www.redcross.org/CPR-trainingFor more information on the PulsePoint mobile app visit www.pulsepoint.org

Red Phone: Cell phones and driving

"On a Friday about 11:15 a.m. at the stop sign at Wren and Leavesley I saw a Gilroy Police SUV in which the driver heading south on Wren was talking on his cell phone as he was driving. I was just wondering if I missed something. Does that law not apply to the police who are giving us tickets for talking on our cell phones as we drive?"

Cookie time: It’s the Girl Scout ‘gotcha!’

The powers that be at Girl Scout headquarters aren’t dumb. They know that, at about this time, New Year’s Resolutions we so devoutly made at the onset of January are becoming a bit threadbare. We’ve been to the gym, eaten carrot sticks, even gone to bed early (before dinner?) to avoid those late evening snacks. And then?

Sixth Peace Convention

On Sunday, December 8th, 2013, the American Muslim Voice Foundation is presenting its 6th Peace Convention at Chandni Restaurant in Newark, California. The AMV Foundation’s conventions have successfully united many multi-faith leaders, scholars, public officials, authors and ordinary citizens whose choices made them extraordinary heroes. For one day, these people from many walks of life share viewpoints and compelling personal stories that extol the strengthening power of peace.

‘Love, Loss and What I Wore’

Nora and Delia Ephron (sisters) took the book “Love, Loss and What I Wore” by Ilene Bacmerman, added stories of some of their friends and their own experiences, and came up with a delightful production that hits home with most women and can tickle the funny bone of the guys in the audience. Sadly Nora Ephron died this past summer and left an enormous library of plays and books. Best known are “When Harry Met Sally,” “Sleepless in Seattle” and this play.
