The risks of roommates, rentals and rice cookers

When I moved out of my parents’ house - contrary to popular belief, I wasn’t kicked out - to head off to Cal Poly, San Luis Obipso, I began what I like to call my adventures in R&R: Renting and roommates.

Golf Tips: Stroke types need the right club

Many golfers continue to try to improve their putting stroke every time they are on the course. As I shared in previous tips, there are two basic stokes. The first stroke is straight back and through. The second stroke is slightly inside on the backstroke and follow-through. Both strokes are good, but you need to know which stroke is more natural for you.

Easy does it

Yesterday, my marathon training plan listed: "5 miles, easy." If you are actually following a specific plan for a race of any distance, it helps to understand the terms that are used. Nearly every race plan includes "easy" days, but what exactly does that mean? Easy is not specific at all--it is the opposite of "hard"--I know that much. But how easy is easy? What does "easy" mean for me? It's obvious that easy days alternate with "hard" days, so it's plain to see that this easy-hard pattern is meant to keep runners from turning every workout into a Hard Day.

SAN JOSE – A two-goal second period proved the difference Thursday night as the red-hot Ottawa Senators turned back the San Jose Sharks 4-1 at sold-out HP Pavilion. Bringing in a 9-1-1 mark for their past 11 outings, the Senators (60 points) continued one point behind Boston for the top...

SVCT opens 45th season with ‘Spelling Bee’

South Valley Civic Theatre recently celebrated its 44th season at the annual People’s Choice Awards Show where Rob Barham and Kel Whisner, as Masters of Ceremony, brought down the house with audience participation and watermelons. Not surprisingly, “The Wizard of Oz,” with special effects, outstanding costumes and scenery, and a huge cast, took home the lion’s share of awards. There isn’t room here to mention names but you can get the low down at www.svct.org.

Baby it’s kale outside

A number of years ago I was on a tour of Highgrove Royal Gardens in England. At this, the private residence of Their Royal Highness, we marveled at the beautiful hostas and ooohed and aaahed over the meadows of wildflowers. It was all quite stunning, my dears. And at the end of the tour guide slowed her pace. She lowered her voice nearly to a whisper as she announced “And here … we have … the California Wild Lilac!” Sounds of delight and awe rippled through our tour group. My colleague and I exchanged quick glances—so much build up for a native California plant that we routinely fly by on the highway without a second thought (no booing here, I truly love our hardworking ceanothus). And I couldn’t help but think about how much coddling and care must go into keeping that Mediterranean climate-loving shrub happy so far from its native soil.
