GILROY – City and county law enforcement officials are investigating the death of a San Jose man who died Saturday night at a local hospital after police had to detain him to allow paramedics to administer medical care, according to the Gilroy Police Department.

The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday the man was 46-year-old Jerry Magana.

Gilroy firefighters and paramedics responded to a 911 call of a man “in medical duress” in the 1800 block of Vista Del Sur Drive around 11:40 p.m. Saturday night, police said.

The man, suffering from a potentially life-threatening medical condition, did not cooperate with medical personnel on scene, who called police for assistance, according to a GPD press release.

After arriving and speaking with medical personnel, police detained the man so he could receive care from paramedics, according to the GPD.

The man’s condition worsened en route to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The GPD, Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the Coroner’s office are investigating the incident, police said.

Police suspect alcohol or drugs may have “negatively contributed to the subject’s medical condition.”

The Coroner’s office will conduct an investigation that will include an autopsy and blood toxicology reports to determine if alcohol or drug intoxication contributed to the subject’s death, police said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the GPD at 846-0350 or anonymously at 1-800-782-7463.
