A 25-year-old San Jose man was killed early Sunday morning after he collided with two fences and a tree, coming to rest in the backyard of a Morgan Hill home, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Traveling southbound at approximately 3:14 a.m. on U.S. 101 in a 2006 Chevy Tahoe, the driver Francisco Cabrera Zarco, 25 of San Jose, veered off the west side of the highway and struck a metal fence, a wood fence and eventually a tree, CHP Officer Herb Kellogg said in a press release. A fire also started from inside the man’s SUV.
Cabrera Zarco was unresponsive when authorities arrived. The Morgan Hill Police Department assisted the CHP in getting the man out of the vehicle, extinguishing the fire and attempting CPR. Once fire and medical personnel arrived, they tried to resuscitate the driver for another 20 minutes before he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say alcohol is suspected as a factor in the wreck as witnesses described seeing the man drive erratically prior to crash. First responders also noted the “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage,” Kellogg added.
The 25-year-old man did not appear to be wearing his seat belt, according to the CHP.
