Police arrested a man who stabbed a stranger for no apparent reason Wednesday night, police said.
“This is distressing as there is no known motivation behind this attack,” according to a police statement. “The victim was tending to personal business when, for no reason whatsoever, he was thrust into a life and death situation.”
About 9 p.m. Wednesday, a man later identified as Christian Fuentes Colin, 21, stabbed a 35-year-old man on the 600 block of East Seventh Street and fled, giving the man multiple but non-life-threatening wounds, police said. The victim was treated at a local hospital, police said.
A few hours later, at about 1 a.m. Thursday, police received a call reporting a man acting strangely near Chestnut and East Seventh streets. The caller reported that the man was acting like he was drunk or under the influence of another substance, Sgt. Wes Stanford said. When officers responded, they were unable to locate the suspect.
A few minutes later, police responded to the 7300 block of Chestnut Street for a report of a man who was under the influence trying to force his way into the home of someone he knew. After police located the man, who they believe was the same one reported acting strangely near Chestnut and East Seventh, the man fled on foot, Stanford said. A short foot pursuit ensued before police arrested the suspect, Colin, about 1:11 a.m. Thursday.
Police cited Colin for misdemeanor resisting arrest and released him, Stanford said.
Later that day, about 12 p.m., officers began a follow-up investigation to the stabbing and determined that Colin matched the description of the suspect in the stabbing, Stanford said. Police arrested Colin again Thursday afternoon without incident at his home on the 600 block of East Seventh Street, near where the stabbing occurred. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
Although police have yet to determine a motive, they do not believe the stabbing was gang-motivated, Stanford said.
