Hollister police shortly after 10:20 a.m. started a pursuit with a driver, who headed north on Fairview Road.
The pursuit started around Hillcrest Road after a driver failed to yield at a stop, according to dispatch reports. The male driver drove east on Hillcrest Road and turned north on Fairview Road. Police have reported the driver at speeds between 50 mph and 60 mph.
Police reported to dispatchers that the driver was moving around in the vehicle and weaving in the light traffic at times. California Highway Patrol officers, meanwhile, were prepared to join the pursuit, which passed Spring Grove Road at 10:30 a.m. and Highway 156 shortly after that.
The driver was westbound approaching Frazier Lake Road at 10:35 a.m. The pursuit then approached the Frazier Lake airport at 10:37 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol, which took over the pursuit at 10:40 a.m., was discussing setting up spike strips at Bloomfield Road.
Authorities reported that the driver struck the spike strips at 10:42 a.m., while the driver is continuing on. The driver is described as a male in his mid-30s and wearing white sneakers and blue jeans. He was driving a Chevy pickup truck.
At 10:53 a.m., police were pursuing the suspect, who had exited the vehicle and was fleeing on foot and spotted near the areas of 7600 Monterey Road, followed by Eigleberry Street.
According to Sgt. Pedro Espinoza with the Gilroy Police Department, the pursuit was initiated by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department after the driver failed to obey officers during a traffic violation stop. A chase ensued and was taken over by the California Highway Patrol somewhere near Pacheco Pass and Frazier Lake Road. The suspect’s abandoned vehicle was later located near the 7500 block of Monterey Road in Gilroy.
“They’re still trying to look for the guy,” said Espinoza around 12:45 p.m. “They stopped a couple of pedestrians, but no luck.”
