Communities United in Prevention and the Gilroy Police Department will sponsor a candlelight vigil 5 p.m. Dec. 15 behind city hall to encourage a peaceful holiday in the community, and to urge against drinking and driving.
The vigil will also serve to remember those killed by drunk drivers and victims of gang violence.
Chief Denise Turner, Gilroy High School students, Communities United in Prevention, the Mexican Community Services Agency, and Glenwood Alliance Neighbors Achieving Success will all participate in the vigil.
Since Jan. 1, 220 people have been arrested for diving under the influence in Gilroy. Also during that time period, one person was killing in an alcohol-related accident.
“With the uptick in gang violence, the police department is taking a no tolerance approach to those engaging in criminal behavior and will hold parolees (and) probationers accountable to meeting the terms of their release,” Turner wrote in a press release.
