Though the new high school won’t be done until 2009, Gilroy
residents can see the structure in online tour

Gilroy – Many discussions have swirled around the idea of a new high school in Gilroy. Many residents wonder what the new structure, located off Day Road, will look like. Wonder no more.
By logging on to the Gilroy Unified School District’s Web site, anyone can take a tour of the new campus and see where future high school students will call a second home.
The tour, accompanied by music, takes visitors on an aerial trip around the fan-shaped, two-story building. Though the structure will be built in phases, the tour shows the project as it will appear upon completion.
A massive elongated archway leads students, staff and visitors to the heart of the school, a covered amphitheater. One corner of the school has a curved, sloping roof, which is where the theater will be located. The arching roof of the gym is kitty-corner to the theater.
Behind the gym are two swimming pools, complete with water slides. Two playing fields – one practice and one competition – also lay along the outskirts of the building. Unless the school district is able to come up with extra funds, the fields will go without lights and a seating complex, as well as a synthetic track, said Steve Brinkman, assistant superintendent. Tree-lined parking lots sit along two sides of the school.
The buildings’ exteriors are a mix of stone veneer and terra-cotta-colored materials. Pat Midtgaard, GUSD school board president, is encouraging residents to take the tour.
