Vocalist Sings for Theatre Co.
Gilroy – Jazz vocalist and cabaret chanteuse Sandra Marlowe will perform a benefit concert supporting Odyssey Theatre Company at the Gilroy High School Theater at 8pm April 20. The concert is entitled “The Silver Lining: Songs of Shadow and Light” and will be a musical reflection on both dark and luminous passages through life, and what it means to be fully human.
“When nitty-gritty life intersects with the creative spirit, I think a place of transformation is born. Where dark clouds meet the moon, there’s that wonderful silver edge. In my life, music and song have followed that turbulent, beautiful, ever-changing edge, thus ‘the silver lining’ idea,” Marlowe said.
Marlowe’s voice shimmers and swells, shouts or sighs as she maneuvers easily from the dramatic turns of musical theater through the swings of cool jazz to the hard landings of blues. The audience will be delighted by the emotional journey taken with her in this special one-night only performance.
Appearing with Marlowe is Anthony Davis, a prominent Bay Area jazz pianist, arranger and entertainer with a devoted Bay Area following.
“Tony is a coveted accompanist amongst professional vocalists. He has a sensitivity and near-intuitive musicality – plus astounding technique – that make working with him an absolute dream. He’s a potent combination of classical training and jazz mastery,” Marlowe said.
Marlowe is a singer, teacher and director with 20 years of performance experience in bands, ensembles, theater and as a solo artist. She credits much of her interpretive and performance skill to five years intensive study with the late Judy Davis, the legendary Warner Bros. vocal coach whose “students” included the likes of Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand and Judy Garland. She has appeared throughout the United States with LA-based jazz band, “Avalon Cats.”
Concert proceeds will benefit Odyssey Theatre Company of Gilroy High School, a nonprofit theatre company that produces all of the productions in the Gilroy High School season, including the annual Senior Play. Odyssey Theatre provides students and community members alike with professional quality theatrical experiences.
Tickets are $15. Call (408) 333-9965 or e-mail in**@************re.org.

Teen Arrested After Fight
Gilroy – Police arrested a 17-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted robbery. About 11:30am Wednesday, a 911 caller told police that a robbery was in progress at the intersection of Sixth and Chestnut streets. When police arrived, they found nobody at the intersection, but firefighters responding to the call located a 23-year-old man with “a bump on his head and a little bleeding” a block south, said Cpl. Veronica Georges. A police officer located a teen boy and girl in the area who matched descriptions given by the 911 caller, and the victim identified the boy as the person who had punched him. There was no apparent robbery; Georges said the incident looks more like a fight, but the boy was arrested on the initial charge.
‘Most Wanted’ Surrenders
Gilroy – A 22-year-old man listed as one of “Gilroy’s Most Wanted” turned himself in to police at 2:30pm Wednesday. Michael Paul Hernandez, a resident of the 7400 block of Monterey Street, was wanted for narcotics possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and reckless driving. Hernandez had been wanted for at least three weeks when he walked into the Gilroy Police Station and self-surrendered.
“He said he was having a hard time getting a job,” said Cpl. Veronica Georges, “and he just wanted to get his stuff together.”
Georges estimated that one in 10 “Most Wanted” suspects self-surrenders in Gilroy.
