It might be an understatement to say that Alex Gerberick was the heart and soul of Christopher’s girls volleyball team this year.
The senior setter racked up 652 assists, 289 digs, 84 kills, 50 aces and 20 blocks this season, leading the Cougars (19-14) to the Monterey Bay League Pacific title.
“She was definitely our rock this year, the first one in the gym and the last one to leave as well,” Cougars coach Brian Calimpong said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more from her.”
Gerberick was rewarded for her efforts when coaches recently voted her the league Most Valuable Player.
Gerberick led the Cougars to an 11-1 run through league play before the team was ousted from the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs with a 3-1 first-round loss to Saratoga.
As if her line of statistics wasn’t enough, Gerberick has compiled a 4.5 GPA, Calimpong said. And she grew as a leader on the court.
“She had all the mechanics and knowledge of the game, but she became a leader on and off the court,” Calimpong said.
Several other Cougars received all-league honors.
Christopher’s Hanna Tabron and Michelle Toves received first-team honors, and Olivia Tabron and Cheyanne Dela Merced were second-team honorees. Honorable mention recognition went to Christopher’s Katelyn Wheat and Emily Doughty.
The league Sportsmanship Award went to Christopher’s Kaitlin Brummitt.
