Ferreira grabs First Team nod, four others earn honors
As the season ran its course, head coach Larry Nabzeska watched as his Christopher High girls varsity volleyball players began to mold themselves into a team.

“The attitude of the girls improved a lot over the season,” said Nabzeska, who took over as head coach early in the season after Sam Navarez stepped down.

“By the end of the season, they weren’t just really good athletes, they were volleyball players.”

Five of those players were recognized for their achievements with the release of the Monterey Bay League awards.

“It was one of the only all-league meetings I’ve been to where I walked away completely happy,” Nabzeska chuckled.

Junior hitter Claudia Ferreira earned First Team All-MBL, wrapping up a successful 2010 as one of the Cougars’ co-captains for their first season at the varsity level.

Setter Alex Gerberick, who is now turning her attention to soccer, grabbed a Second Team bid. Hanna Tabron and Merrett Brown, both basketball players as well, were selected to the Honorable Mention list.

The Cougars other captain, Paulina Vo Griffin, was distinguished with the Sportsmanship Award.

Nabzeska said he is stepping down as head coach and has handed the reins to the team over to Tom Schatz, who assisted on varsity and junior varsity last season.

“Several of the girls are playing club and that will be a big bonus for them next year,” Nabzeska said.

— Cynthia Gonzalez a standout on the CHS cross country team, was rewarded with an MBL All-League selection.
