Head coach Larry Nabzeska commended his Christopher High girls varsity volleyball team for its work ethic in its match against Monterey on Tuesday night.
However, despite the Cougars’ best efforts, the Toredadors escaped with a three-set win 25-17, 28-26, 25-22 in Monterey Bay League action Tuesday night in Monterey.
“We played well and there was nothing I was dissatisfied with,” Nabzeska said. “We got to a lot of balls we hadn’t been getting to, but we still can’t put it away.”
Leading 24-22, the Cougars had the Toreadors with their backs against the wall in the second set. But, Monterey managed to stay alive and eventually stole the set.
Despite the loss, Nabzeska was pleased with the progress his team continued to show.
“For the first time I saw emotion from them,” he said. “I saw hustle and I saw work. We were diving into the stands.”
The Cougars host North Monterey County on Thursday. The Condors stunned CHS in a five-set thriller earlier this season.
“It’s a game we can win,” Nabzeska said. “If we play like we did against Monterey we will be fine.”
Game time Thursday has been moved to 5 p.m. following the freshman game.
