California’s move to legalize marijuana was rejected Tuesday night with 53.7 percent of voters statewide opposed to Proposition 19.
Proposition 19 would have legalized possession of an once or more of marijuana and permitted small household cultivation for adults over 21. It would have allowed cities and counties to tax and regulate retail pot sales – but specified no taxes.
“We just need to do some research and see why people voted ‘no,’ ” said advocate Richard Lee, who donated $1.3 million to qualify Proposition 19 for the ballot and another $200,000 to the election campaign.
“We did get more votes than (gubernatorial candidate) Meg Whitman. And she spent more than $140 million. We need to look at the bright side.”
