The district is in the midst of rewriting its own state governing law, redefining its scope and function in the process to broaden its power and allow it to collect more money. Call San Jose Assemblyman Joe Coto’s capitol office at 916-319-2023 and give him an earful for sponsoring AB 2483. Tell him to scrap it for two years – at least until the census is counted.
CHEERS for the City Council’s continuing support for the wayfinding sign program. Good signage is important for the local economy. Getting people from our outlets to our wineries to Gilroy Gardens to downtown is important. It’s a benefit to the entire community economically, and cements a perception in visitor’s minds. Sure, the Council needs to be reasonable and question spending. Can the design of the signs remain intact, and yet the cost be reduced? Also, are the business interests contributing enough to the sum total? Every segment – from the Chamber to the wineries – should have a solid financial stake in this. If not, the Council should reconsider the funding issue.
CHEERS for our Gilroy High School graduates who will cross the stage Friday and enter a new world. Work or college awaits. Whether leaving home or staying, best wishes to all. Mostly, be safe and smart during the next week so that graduation 2K10 is a lasting good memory for all the graduates, their families and the community.
CHEERS for the bids to build the new library which came in $6.5 million under projections. That’s a great start. Now, let’s see if the project can actually be built without the usual wink-and-nod “it’s a government job” change orders which drive the price 25 to 35 percent higher. Also, just because the bid came in lower than expected doesn’t mean every bell and whistle should be added to spend the $6.5 million. Remember, most everyone is hurting, so let’s keep the price tag down and celebrate a civic project well planned and well completed.
JEERS for the ridiculous weather. First, it’s raining and cold in June, then it’s knock, knock, knocking on the 100-degree door. Ma Nature, how about a little smoother transition? Jeers, too, for what that lousy drizzle did to muck up the hay and cherry crops locally.
CHEERS for Election Day. It couldn’t come soon enough. The incessant taped phone messages at home, the crummy signs at the intersections, the TV and radio ads that go on ad infinitum … hopefully all goes away after today. Sick and tired of election bombardment in June means that tolerating November will be really tough. Still, don’t forget to vote. It’s not too late.
CHEERS for Don Gage, who’s gearing up to run for a water district seat. Maybe he can clean up the mess at the Taj Mahal headquarters.
