GILROY — Debra Cauble, a 24-year-old former assistant county council, has been named lead attorney for the Santa Clara Valley Water District replacing Anthony Bennetti who retired in June.

The water district manages the drinking water resources and promotes flood protection for all of Santa Clara County. As a legal advisor, Cauble will work with two other district council members to manage legal affairs for the water district’s staff and board of directors.
“After a great experience with the county, I’m really excited about the opportunity to come to the district with it’s dual missions of water supply management and flood protection,” Cauble said.
In her new position, she’ll be responsible for representing all aspects of the water district, and serving as it’s legal counsel under the direction of CEO Stan Williams.
Cauble was one of several applicants for the job that went through an extensive interview process, according to Water District Spokesman Mike DiMarco.
“I’ve been very impressed with her,” said DiMarco. “I’ve heard nothing but glowing praise … how often do you hear that about an attorney?”
Cauble’s previous experience includes serving as a working manager of a 10-member team of attorneys that advise and represent the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, the county executive, and other county departments that oversee parks, construction, real estate, land use and environmental stewardship.
She has practiced exclusively in California since admission to the state bar in 1978.
has also served as counsel to the planning commission’s of San Jose and Palo Alto, taught land use law at Lincoln Law School of San Jose and administrative law for the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
“The predominant thread in my career has been public service,” said Cauble.
