With all the rain, it’s ironic that the Santa Clara Valley Water
District is, you guessed it, considering yet another water rate
increase
The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the Santa Clara Valley Water District which, in the midst of record rainfall, is proposing yet another water rate increase. The SCVWD is redefining the term “going to the well once too often.” It’s unfortunate that unfortunate that few voters apparently pay attention to water district elections. Perhaps with the incessant drum beat of rate increases, the coming June election will be different.

JEERS: For the absolutely weird weather pattern that has no end in sight. Sing along … “It always rains in California …”

JEERS: For the City Council’s narrow decision to patrol the private Club Drive in Eagle Ridge. This sets a poor precedent. And now that the camel’s nose is in the tent, the next request will be to patrol the entire Eagle Ridge spread. Here’s the deal: Private, gated communities are just that. The city should be happy to patrol Eagle Ridge if the residents wanted to add that cost to their homeowner’s association dues. That’s the bottom line, and it’s too bad.

CHEERS: For Gilroy High School agriculture teacher Heather Nolan, who is working hard to inject new life into a worthwhile program. Learning about growing seeds, raising animals and the economics that goes along with agriculture is extremely valuable for the students and the future of our country.

JEERS: For the prospect of more than 11,000 homes going up in San Benito County in two massive building proposals. Developers DMB and Del Webb believe San Benito County is ripe for the picking and both are ready to send their projects before county voters.

CHEERS: For Gilroy High School wrestler Adin Dueñas, a Central Coast Section champion and third-place finisher in the state meet. Dueñas capped off his high school career with a flurry and appears headed to Fresno State to wrestle.

CHEERS: For Las Animas Elementary School teacher Carmen Kotto, who dances and passes out fake reward money to help motivate her students. It’s working. Her second- and third-graders made remarkable improvement in their test scores over the year with particular leaps in math. It’s dedicated teachers like Kotto who are going to make a difference in the lives of students and the progress of Gilroy’s public schools.
