Wenceslao (Don Wenci) Torres Alfaro passed away after a long and lengthy illness on April 27, 2011.
He was born to Fidel Alfaro and Margarita Torres in Huaniqueo Michoacán, Mexico on September 28, 1924. He was preceded in death by his wife, Adelina Alfaro in 1984.
Don Wenci journeyed to the United States through the Bracero program at 17 years of age. He worked and traveled through several states riding the rails in those early years.
He settled in Gilroy and over the years worked for many ranchers including Roy Ueno, Gerald Rianda, and the Obata Brothers. In later years, he moved to San Jose working many years for Boise Cascade. He finally retired and started his own landscaping business. One achievement he was most proud of was earning and becoming a United States citizen in October 2000.
Although he lived in the states, he never forgot his origins. He traveled back to Mexico often to visit his many relatives and upon his return regaled us with humorous stories of his adventures. His chief enjoyment was spending time with his large extended family. He loved being surrounded by his family. He enjoyed giving backyard BBQs where everyone was always welcomed. He enjoyed all types of sports, especially boxing and football. He was a die-hard Raider fan, with the 49ers a close second.
During his long life Don Wenci helped friends and neighbors whenever they needed a helping hand. He was a wonderful caring man and was greatly loved by his family. His sense of humor always made us laugh. His zest for life was contagious; we will miss his smiles and laughter.
He is survived by his wife, Maura Alfaro, daughters; Margarita (Jesse), Blanca, Gloria (Dominguez), Rosemary (Juan), Cecelia, also sons; Jose (Socorro), Eddie, and Enrique. Extended family members are Tony, Cruz, George, Martha and Olegario. Don Wenci has 11 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews who will miss the opportunity to learn from the wisdom and teachings of a life well lived.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Wednesday, May 4 starting 1:00 P.M. with a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday May 5, 2011, both at Habing Family Funeral Home, 129 4th St. Gilroy.
