Amah Mutsun heritage presentation

Valentin Lopez, tribal leader of the Amah Mutsun tribe, will talk about the history of the Amah Mutsun tribe from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St. Lopez will present the history of the tribe from pre-contact to present times, including the significance of our own Ascencion Solorsano, a “curandera” who used herbal remedies. Claudia Stevens will display paintings of the native plants the Amah Mutsun used for healing purposes. Light refreshments will be served. Details 842-2968.

Learn how to write a novel in 90 days

Author Al Watt will be signing copies of “The 90-Day Novel” at noon Sunday at Barnes & Nobles, 6825 Camino Arroyo. He will speak with any aspiring writers about their creative writing process and teach them how to get the first draft of their novel or memoir finished in 90 days. Family Junior Ranger Day

The Pinnacles National Monument will be hosting a Junior Ranger Program for the entire family at the newly opened Visitors Contact Station on the west side of the park. Programs will be held at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m. Guests can also visit the station and ask for a Junior Ranger Book to explore Pinnacles on one’s own. Sign out an Adventure Pack, a backpack filled with tools such as guide books and hand lenses.

This weekend is a fee free weekend so there is no entrance fee to enter, Jan 14-16. NOTE: Hwy. 146 from the east and west side of the park do not connect and there is no direct route through the park. To attend the programs, please enter the park from the West side, near King City.
