Allow me to properly introduce myself. My name is Josh Koehn and I am your new sports editor.

I could tell you the story of my life in some kind of chronological order, but that seems boring to write, not to mention boring to read. Instead, here are some snapshots of the person who will be directing your future sports coverage:

– I was born in an Army base in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

– I was raised by a high school teacher/basketball coach and a registered nurse who eventually started her own software company.

– I eat red meat and drink beer.

– I grew up in Missouri before moving around the country after my dad died in a car accident – back when wearing a seat belt was considered optional. I ended up in San Jose for middle and high school.

– I received a sportsmanship award from my physical education instructor in third grade.

– In college, I had my entire intramural soccer team thrown out of a championship game after making improper remarks and gestures towards players on another team.

– I was the sports editor of my college newspaper at UC Davis.

– I worked my way through school in jobs ranging from working in a coffee shop, being a secretary, bookkeeping for a senile ceramics company owner, selling advertising space and writing and editing for various newspapers.

– I was cursed by my father who raised me to be a Detroit Lions fan.

– My three favorite sports movies are White Men Can’t Jump, Hoosiers and Hoop Dreams.

– As you may have just guessed, basketball is my favorite sport.

– But no sport is more exciting to watch than football.

– I believe Barry Bonds was already the greatest player to ever pick up a bat and glove, before he started juicing.

– I believe steroids are for weaklings.

– As far as my game goes, I agree with Mark Twain who once said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled.”

– The most memorable sports moment of my life was being a frantic color commentator when UC Davis football went to Palo Alto and upset Stanford.

These are all singular moments of what I’ve done, who I was and who I am today. I’ve come to believe moments are what life is about. I’ve definitely had my fair share of good, bad and in some cases, ugly.

But enough about me. This newspaper is about all of you. It documents your highs and lows, your triumphs and defeats.

Moving forward, the sports section will be receiving a makeover in style and content, and we want you to have an active hand in shaping the direction of these pages.

We will be giving you uplifting stories – putting a spotlight on the people who make Gilroy a better community.

We will be uncompromising – calling out actions that are unacceptable and reprehensible. We will also provide you with obscure stories about people and activities you didn’t know were just a stone’s throw away.

And lastly, we will do our best to never, ever, be boring.
