SALINAS – Gilroy’s best track and field athlete the last two seasons proved once again Saturday why he is one of the best in the Central Coast Section, just days after signing an athletic scholarship with UC Riverside. Meanwhile, the GHS frosh-soph boys team took down another title.
Competing at the Bill Kearney Invitational at Hartnell College in Salinas, senior sprinter Peter Guenther won the 110 High Hurdles with a time of 14.78 seconds – a meet record – and placed second in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles in 38.45 seconds, less than two-tenths of a second behind top-place finisher Mike Skinner of Alvarez (38.27).
“I’m very happy and proud for the guy,” said Mustangs coach Jeff Myers regarding Guenther’s scholarship, which will cover two-thirds of his education costs. “He’s put in the time.”
Guenther said the decision was made easier after visiting the campus just before track season. Meeting coaches as well as future teammates, Guenther said it was the most natural fit.
“It’s up-and-coming (as a program), they’re growing,” Guenther said. “They also have a good business program, so I like that.”
While Guenther was continuing to make strides toward the sectional and state meets later in the season, the frosh-soph boys pulled out an epic win over Paso Robles, which held a lead over the Mustangs going into the final event of pole vaulting. Down two points, 71-69, going into the pole vault, Eric Martinez and Patrick Hughes took third and fourth, respectively, to giver Gilroy the team title.
“Basically, the vaulters won it for us at the end,” Myers said.
Freshman Jourdan Soares also played a pivotal role in the victory by winning the long jump in the second to last event.
Sarah Unadia was a top finisher from the GHS varsity girls’ side, winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.19.
