MANTECA – Over President’s Day weekend, the SV Storm (comprised of boys in Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy) came off a three-month break from baseball, shook off the rust and won the Super NIT 10U AA Tournament in Manteca.
The three-day tournament fielded 10 travel teams from Northern California.
At the completion of the three-game pool play portion of the tournament, SV Storm was seeded second with a 3-0 record.
In the semifinals, SV Storm faced the Tiburon Pirates, beating them 11-6 and advanced to face No. 1-seed Fremont Reds, which had only given up three runs in the previous four games.
Three innings into the championship game the SV Storm found themselves down 8-2. Over the next three innings the bats came alive with clutch hitting from Christopher Knopf, Billy Mazotti, PJ Rochon and DJ Washington.
In the bottom of the sixth inning with bases loaded and two outs, Nathan Medrano, tournament MVP, came through with the game-winning hit to send the SV Storm to a 13-12 victory.
The tournament was a full team effort with outstanding pitching from Lucas Schmidt (elected to All-Tournament Team), and Mazotti, timely hitting from Rochon, Dylan Holler, Derek Petersen, and home runs from Nolan Cisewski and Mazotti.
With this win, the SV Storm has qualified to compete in the 2010 10U AA World Series being held in various locations across the country. SV Storm is headed Cooperstown in June 2010 to participate in their national tournament.
