“There is a lot of talent in this little group,” said Lisa Porria who volunteers her time with the Gilroy Youth Bowling League as its media relations person.

Bowlers ranging age from 4 to 18 years old, lace up their bowling shoes for two hours on Saturdays as part of the youth league and 19 of those youth have qualified for the Pepsi National Bowling Tournament, which takes place March 12-13 in Fremont.

“Competition gets a little more intense,” Porria said.

Qualifying parameters include a bowler maintaining or increasing his or her average over a designated period of time.

The local bowlers headed to the District Finals are Adam and Eric Aguilar, McKenna Baldwin, Bianka Carranza, Elizabeth Connolly, Kenny Dominick, Andres Farias, Chase Garibaldi, Justin Harrison, Kristal and Marissa Hernandez, Diego Jara, Briana and Jessica Juhl, Tyler Keen, Alexandra Osborne, Brandon Porria, Anthony Rovella and Julio Villalobos.

“I am very excited to see all almost everyone from our program made it to the district finals.” said Rich Zurlo, youth Director for Gilroy Bowl in a statement sent out by Porria last week. “The youth have worked very hard to get to this point.”

The boys and girls will be separated into three different divisions based on age and scratch or handicap bowling.

Winners in each division move on to the state/zone finals and some may earn scholarships.
