Gilroy – This past weekend at the NorCal vs. SoCal Border Tournament in Salinas, the Chaos fastpitch softball 12-and-under team took second and the 10-and-under team took first. With the win, the 10U team earned the No. 1 ranking in their age group in Northern California under the National Softball Association point system.

The 10U girls from Gilroy showed no mercy taking the championship game 7-1 and outscored opponents 54-10 at the tournament.

With the top seed Martinez Bulldogs having destroyed their opponents all weekend, allowing only five runs in four games, the Gilroy Girls knew they had to bring their bats to championship play.

Gilroy took a four-run lead in the bottom of the first when Shawnte Garcia muscled in Kaylana Mah and Ashlee Williams with a stand up triple. After Garcia herself scored, the girls continued to pound the Martinez pitchers with eight of nine batters in the lineup getting hits.

Backed by outstanding defensive play, Celeste M. Jimenez sealed the victory going four innings, allowing one run and striking out six.

“I wish everyone from our town was there to see these girls play,” said manager James Jimenez. “These girls are amazing.”

The rest of Gilroy’s explosive offense was led with home runs over the weekend by Williams (3), Garcia (2), Randi Rogers (1) and Mah (1). Solid hitting by Amber Gamboa, Angelica Carrillo, Alex Zamaripa, and Morgan Rogers helped bring the team batting average to a sky-high .649.

For the weekend, the Gilroy pitching was led by Jimenez (2-0 record, 9IP, 11K, 1 run) and Casey Lester (2-0 record, 4IP, 8K, 4 runs). Mah, Aly Olvera, and Rogers came in as a relief pitchers.
