Suspected gang members range in age from 14 to 18
Staff Report

Gilroy – A fight between suspected gang members at San Ysidro Park resulted in the arrest of four Gilroy teens Sunday evening, police said.

Three Gilroy juveniles aged, 14,15, and 17-years-old were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Gilroy resident Rafael Betancourt Jr., 18, also was arrested for resisting arrest.

Police received a call about 5:40pm that there was a fight between gang members at the park involving knives and bats. However, the weapons found at the scene were sticks and rocks.

Two male victims were allegedly assaulted by the teens. Police believe there were others involved, but they scattered upon hearing police sirens.

One victim, aged 24, was hit with rocks and sustained minor injuries.

“Realizing he was in trouble, he just ran into a nearby apartment,” said Gilroy Police Sgt. Kurt Svardal.

The second victim followed him inside the apartment on the 7500 block of Rogers Lane.

The fight is being investigated by the Anti-Crime Team. Police believe it is gang-related.
